BOOK COVERS

CONCEPT IMAGERY AND DESIGN

FROM 1992-1995 DAVID CARSON'S SIREN CALL  LURED ME TOWARD PERIODICAL AND PUBLICATION DESIGN.

MY SENIOR YEAR IN COLLEGE, I INTERNED AT LEE BYRD'S CINCO PUNTO PRESS. DURING THAT TIME, SHE OFFERED ME A POSITION AT HER REGULAR 9-5 GIG - WHICH ALSO ALLOWED ME TO WORK ON BIGGER AND "MORE CORPORATE" DESIGN PROJECTS WITH AN ACTUAL PAYCHECK INVOLVED. IN HINDSIGHT, I ALWAYS WISH I WOULD HAVE KEPT MY FEET IN BOTH ARENAS, BUT NAIVETÉ WON OUT BY PUSHING ME TOWARDS THE MORE STANDARD OPTION.

THE CALL CAME AGAIN SIX YEARS LATER AFTER PICKING UP A COPY OF CHIP KIDD'S THE CHEESE MONKEYS. THIS TIME, MY THEN-CURRENT CAREER DID NOT ALLOW FOR ANY IMMEDIATE ACTION. I LIVED VICARIOUSLY FOR A WHILE BY COLLECTING ONLY WELL-DESIGNED BOOKS.

IN 2004, I HAD A BREAKTHROUGH. I WAS ABLE TO ART DIRECT A START-UP PUBLICATION CALLED SKI TIME MAGAZINE AFTER DOING SOME FREELANCE WORK FOR STORM MOUNTAIN PUBLISHING WHILE LIVING IN COLORADO. I WENT IN ON A NUANCED DESIGN FOR THE PUBLICATION. SOME OF THE AUDIENCE INITIALLY QUESTIONED ITS EXPERIMENTAL AND INNOVATIVE LAYOUT  - BUT OVERALL A MAJORITY OF SUBSCRIBERS LOVED HOW IT DIFFERENTIATED ITSELF FROM OTHER SKIING PUBLICATIONS BY CHAMPIONING ITSELF AS BEING TRUE TO THE EXTREME NATURE OF THE SPORTS IT REPRESENTED.

IT WAS DURING THESE THREE WINDOWS IN TIME, I HELD TO THE DREAM THAT ONE DAY I'D BE ABLE TO COMPLETELY STEER MY DESIGN CAREER DESIGNING FOR THE PUBLICATION INDUSTRY. BELOW ARE SOME BOOK COVERS I'VE DESIGNED - MEANT TO CAPTURE MY APPROACH TO THIS GREAT CRAFT. I HOPE YOU ENJOY VIEWING THEM AS MUCH AS I DID CREATING THEM.
